I am part of this charity because as the saying goes
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
As a doctor I see the faces of those who have been told they have a limited life expectancy on a daily basis. Then they look beside them, into the eyes of their partners.
Most of the time they have already spent a lifetime together, but life always got in the way so they were never able to celebrate their love in front of the world by signing that piece of paper that legally secures a better future for their loved one.
When a person gets told they do not have long to live, they suddenly remember what is really important. They realise that what they really want is to marry that person that was always by their side. When a patient says, “I wish I would have had the chance to get married” I feel honoured to be able to say “I can help you with that”.
I can’t make their illness go away but I might be able to stretch their lifespan for a few extra months or even maybe a year or two. Through Gift of a Wedding I can offer them the chance to have something to look forward to, a day of happiness surrounded by the people that really matter, a chance to take those pictures for the children to cherish for the rest of their lives.
Even though they don’t have long to be together, in their hearts their wedding day will live forever.
